Facebook ad targeting is one of the most effective ways to reach your target audience. With Facebook’s sophisticated algorithms, you can target people based on demographics, interests, and behaviours. Additionally, you can create Custom Audiences using data from your website, Facebook page, or app users. This ensures that your ads are shown only to people who are most likely to be interested in what you have to offer.

Here Are Some Tips On How Best To Do It:
1. Always use the most up-to-date information when creating your target audience.
This includes things like their current location, age, gender, interests, languages, and any other relevant information. Facebook ad targeting also allows you to save your target audience and use it in the future.
In the detailed targeting options, you can create a new audience by inserting demographics, interests, or behaviours. If you run out of ideas you can click “suggestions” for help, this will drill down all the interests, demographics, and behaviours that are similar to your input (target audiences).
Another option is you can click “browse”, which also has 3 options including interests, demographics, and behaviours. But this option helps you to explore, filter, and see data in a category. For example, if you click on life events this will be broken down into anniversary, date of birth, friends of…, parental status, relationship status, and work.
2. Keep your target audience as specific as possible.
Facebook offers tons of targeting options. So it is very important when creating audiences is to remember that, the more specific you are, the easier it will be to reach them with your ads. To do this you can use the “narrow audience” or/and “exclude” options to target a specific audience.
How do these two options work?
- “Narrow Audience” – at the image above, I have input Food and Restaurants as a target market so if were to target a more specific interest I would click on the “Narrow Audience” option and input Home Delivery then this means that I am targeting people who have an interest in food and restaurants and must also have an interest in online delivery services.
- “Exclude” – if I were selling clean food and I don’t want people who show an interest in fast food then I would use this option to exclude people out so therefore I will get more relevant audiences.
Pay attention to the audience size make sure it is green between “Specific” and “Broad”. Remember, the more specific your targeting is-the easier it will be for potential customers or the right audience to find and engage with what they need.
3. Make sure to test different ad targeting options before settling on one.
This way you can see what works best for your business and goals. By this, you can use Facebook Custom Audiences, Saved Audiences, Lookalike Audiences, or/and Special Ad Audiences. You can find these options in Facebook Ads Manager, at the top right you will see the ‘All tools” section, click on that then you will see Audiences. So that is where you can begin to draft your audiences! Click Create Audience.
4. Use Facebook Custom Audiences
To connect with people who have already shown interest in your business is connecting with your existing customers. This is a great way to increase your chances of conversion. You can create an audience from your customer contacts, website traffic, mobile app, or Facebook presence.
5. Use Facebook Remarketing Audiences
Custom audiences are a great way to target your remarketing ads based on the website visitors’ behaviour. You can create custom audiences by segmenting people who have visited certain pages or performed specific actions, like adding items into their cart but did not complete purchase – this is because those individuals tend not to buy from you at the first time so the idea of using a remarketing audience is to advertise the ads to them again in order to remind them that there are still products in the cart. So the most popular and efficient way to target existing customers is through carefully crafted custom audiences. However, creating custom audiences based on your own website data, you’ll need to install a Facebook pixel first.
6. Use Facebook Lookalike Audiences
Lookalikes are a great way to reach new customers that share similar interests and buying habits as your current clientele. Using an existing custom audience, you can target people who have been interested in your product or service. For example, creating a 1% lookalike audience from people who made a purchase to get similar purchase behaviour. At the “select audience size”, the higher the percentage the bigger and broader it gets or less relevant.
7. Use Facebook Audience Insights tool
With the help of Facebook’s Audience Insights tool, you can learn about your audience, see performance results, and more. You can even target your competitors’ existing fans.
Learn More About Facebook Special Ad Audiences
If your ads are related to credit, employment, or housing, or about social issues, elections or politics then you have to declare your ad targeting in a special category. With this Facebook ad targeting, ads will be restricted to some Facebook users such as Location, Age, and Gender Targeting.
